Greetings!

We appreciate your post in the Apple Support Community.

Recognizing and dealing with malware on a MacBook involves a few steps. Here's a guideline:

  • Signs You Might Have a Virus/Malware:
  • Unexpected Ads and Pop-ups: If you're seeing ads in places they shouldn't be or experiencing excessive pop-ups, this might indicate adware.
  • Performance Issues: A sudden, unexplained slowdown of your MacBook.
  • Unwanted Applications: Applications appearing that you don't remember installing.
  • Browser Issues: Your web browser's homepage changes without your input, or you notice new toolbars, extensions, or plugins.
  • Random Reboots or Application Crashes: Frequent crashes might be a sign of malware.
  • Ransom Messages: Messages that claim your data will be deleted unless you pay a "ransom."

How to Remove the Malware:

  • Safe Mode: Restart your MacBook and hold down the Shift key until the Apple logo appears. This will prevent any malicious apps from running when the system starts up.
  • Check Login Items: Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items to see which apps start when you log in. Remove any suspicious ones.
  • Update macOS: Keeping your operating system updated ensures you have the latest security patches.
  • Check Browser Extensions: Go to your browser settings and check the list of extensions, plugins, or add-ons. Remove any you don't recognize or need.
  • Backup Important Data: Make sure to back up important data. In extreme cases, you might need to erase your hard drive and reinstall macOS.
  • Stay Updated & Educated: Make sure all your software, especially your operating system and web browser, is updated. Avoid downloading files from suspicious websites or opening email attachments from unknown senders.

Hello emilie35,

If you need assistance, Apple suggests:

"In addition to hardware repairs at the Genius Bar, you have other options for direct support. Get your questions answered by an expert via phone, chat, or email. Apple Support takes care of everything, from setting up your device, recovering your Apple ID, to replacing a display."

Schedule an appointment at the Genius Bar in your nearest Apple Store and get help from an Apple expert.

Genius Bar Termine und Apple Support Optionen – Apple (DE)
Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple (UK)

Apple Store - Store finden - Apple (DE)
Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple (UK)

Alternatively, you can contact support or schedule a Genius Bar appointment using the free Apple Support App available in the App Store.

Best regards.
