For years, we've been hearing from Apple that it's pointless to close apps running in the background because iOS takes care of memory management. But: As soon as two or more apps are running in the background, the iPhone 16 (iOS 18.0.1] gets so hot that I can't hold it in my hand or carry it in my trouser pocket without getting pain. Sometimes it also causes the iPhone to restart itself (without a prior error message). This is not about particularly CPU hungry apps, but just stuff you use every day. It's really noticeable that the heating doesn't occur if I really close all the apps manually. But of course this is not a permanent solution.
