Upgrade MacBook Air from macOS High Sierra to macOS Catalina without loosing installed apps

Is it possible to update my MacBook Air (13 inch, 2017) from High Sierra (10.13.6) to macOS Catalina (10.15.7) without loosing the Apps installed on my Mac?
I have old versions of Microsoft Office on my Mac installed. Are they going to disappear after the update from High Sierra (10.13.6) to macOS Catalina (10.15.7)? That would be unfortunate as I paid for these Apps back in the day. Thank you in advance.

I found the MacOS Catalina in the Appstore via Google Chrome.

besides MacOS Catalina 10.15.7, your MacBook Air can easily install MacOS Big Sur 11.7.7 as well as MacOS Monterey 12.6.6, although I would question whether the "old" version of MS Office as well as the other apps will still work without problems after installing one of the newer MacOS - from Catalina onwards, MacOS works in 64bit architecture; thus, the possibility to work with 32bit apps is omitted under these MacOS.

My suggestion:

Get a fast external SSD connected via USB C and install one of the newer MacOS on the external drive.
This way, the original state and the working conditions on the internal SSD of your MB Air remain unchanged offering you the possibility, after starting the MB Air from the external SSD, to get to know the "new" MacOS and possibly, in the medium term, to gradually update your "old" apps to the 64bit environment of the newer MacOS, in order to finally - it is entirely up to you - completely switch the MacBook Air and the internal SSD to one of the newer MacOS

Seit Catalina (macOS 10.15) werden ausschließlich 64-Bit Apps unterstützt. Wenn Du das Upgrade durchführst, können 32-Bitt Apps nicht mehr ausgeführt werden.

Office Mac 2016 = version 16.16.27 and Office Mac 2022 = version 16.74 work under OSX 13.6 (Ventura). Office Mac 2011 = Version 14.7.7 does not work under Ventura. If I recall it correctly the "App does not function"-icon was also shown under Big Sur.
I transferred the new versions from Mojave to Ventura. With the first start I got an alert that the software has to be activated. The activation only requires that you sign in at Microsoft with the mail-address and password used for the original activation. After that you see all the programs you have registered and only have to click on the one which should be activated again.
By the way I have used Apple's migration app which even activates the Office package - probably because it was a reinstall on the same computer. In a second transfer I used the migration app to get everything on a new MacBook. Everything worked out fine except the routine regarding the user accounts. It was a pain .. Es tut mir leid daß ich mich so daneben benommen habe. Aber ich wollte gegenüber dem Fragesteller Kewune (ähnlich wie Mercutio) nur höflich und respektvoll sein, indem ich ihm eine Antwort in der von ihm gewählten Sprache, also englisch, schrieb.

…das ist sehr freundlich von dir. Dafür musst du dich nicht entschuldigen. Es gibt aber eine eigene englischsprachige Community, wenn jemand lieber in Englisch schreiben möchte. Das erhöht die Effizienz unserer möglichen Hilfen.

Und noch eine Ergänzung zum Thema „Foren“: Ich war seit 1985 in der MUG-NYC (Macintosh User Group New York City). Damals trafen wir uns auch noch in Person quasi „analog“ in Manhattan um uns in Sachen Apple II oder Lisa oder Macintosh 128k auszutauschen. Gegen Ende des letzten Jahrhunderts lud Apple die MUGs ein, sich zentral auf „Apple Discussions“ zu treffen

Vor einigen Jahre fiel mir auf, daß ich auf meine Beiträge im englischen Bereich Antworten von Moderatoren in deutsch bekam. Außerhalb des englischsprachigen Raum gab es inzwischen viele lokale Foren wie das deutsche oder französische

Im deutsche Forum bündelte Apple ähnlich wie in den USA (aus den MUGs) lokalen Gruppierungen wie die von Apple-Fans in Walldorf, Heidelberg oder Mannheim

Ich stieg daher auf die deutsche Community um in der Annahme, daß inzwischen alle englischen Beiträge weltweit in alle Foren gespiegelt werden. Zumindest konnte ich mit der gleichen Apple-ID in beide Foren einsteigen und las im deutschen Forum deutsche und englische Beiträge. Über die Jahre wuchs die deutsche Community stark an. Möglicherweise war das der Grund, warum Apple die deutsche Community vor einigen Jahren abtrennt - aber das ist alles nur meine Spekulation. Ich mußte zumindest beim heutigen Wieder-Anmelden mit meiner Apple-ID in den USA meinen Namen „Schwabe5“ ändern (weil dieser Name ja schon in Deutschland vergeben ist) und ein neues Avatar festlegen, mit welchen meine Beiträge dort versehen werden.
Deutsche Beiträge werden nicht gespiegelt. Dort findet man aber deutlich mehr Beiträge als im deutschen Forum - so ist trifft meine aktuelle Fragestellung zur Feuergefahr des zugeklappten MacBook Air M2 im deutschen Forum auf Unverständnis, im englischen Forum laufen 20 Threads zum Thema Laptops und Brandgefahr.
